What is Adderal?

Adderall is one of many drugs or stimulants abused by teens. Adderall is known as the “smart” drug because of the increased ability for the abuser to remain awake and continue to function. It is legally prescribed, often to teenagers and children, in an effort to control hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder.

How it works

Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant. It affects chemicals in the brain and Neuroreceptors that contribute to hyperactivity, allowing the user to control impulses. Adderall releases the medicine slowly if taken as prescribed, which is swallowed whole.


Teens abuse the use of Adderall by breaking the capsule open and chewing it. In this case the drug is released too quickly. Some teenagers can handle Adderall without over-dosing. However, if a teen takes too much for the body to handle, it can be life-threatening. “An overdose of Adderall can still be fatal”, according to


  • The Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS)  reports that one in eight teens (13 percent) have taken the stimulants Ritalin or Adderall when it was not prescribed for them, at least once in their lifetime.
  • Nearly one-third of parents say they believe Rx stimulants like Ritalin or Adderall, normally prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can improve a teen’s academic performance even if the teen does not have ADHD.
  • One in eight teens (about 2.7 million) now reports having misused or abused the Rx stimulants Ritalin or Adderall at least once in their lifetime.
  • 9 percent of teens (about 1.9 million) report having misused or abused the Rx stimulants Ritalin or Adderall in the past year (up from 6 percent in 2008) and 6 percent of teens (1.3 million) report abuse of Ritalin or Adderall in the past month (up from 4 percent in 2008).
