This past week our teens in rehab were taught a few coping skills by our community Tai Chi Master, Mike Kaplan. This exercise served to teach our teenage boys how to concentrate their energy into something positive. Additionally, they have gained valuable insight into a powerful tool they can use to aid their sobriety.

How does Inspirations use Tai Chi to help teens
Inspirations incorporated Tai Chi as a form of therapy after the great strides we saw our teens making through Yoga therapy. With that in mind, we searched for another alternative therapy method that would invoke the similar effects as yoga! After further research, we discovered Tai Chi offered the best mental and physical benefits.
True to its word Tai Chi had an amazing impact on our teen boys. Although many were wary at first they quickly took to Master Mike and heeded his every word. During this session, our teens were taught flowing movements that are incorporated into forms.
Mike Kaplan has over 20 years of experience perfecting his skill in Tai Chi and living sober. In addition, to being very knowledgeable about his trade. Another reason our teens really took to Mike was because of his experience in addiction! Throughout the lesson, our teens were taught just exactly how this can help when in need of coping. They were also given real life examples of how and when to use these techniques. Many of our teens were in awe at how well the breathing techniques were able to help them feel calm.

Meet our Tai Chi Master!
Michael Kaplan the new Inspirations Tai Chi master instructor has a wide range of martial arts training and coping skills. In addition to his Tai Chi skills, he is an 8th-degree black belt and master in Shaolin Kung-fu, Jiu-jitsu, and Karate Kempo. He first began his martial arts training in 1972 and recieved his black belt in 1986. Mike has taught a wide range of students from women, children, teens, the elderly and former addicts.
I just love to help other people especially these teens. Growing up is hard and when you add drugs and alcohol to the mix it really helps that these kids can get a chance to learn how self-discipline and control. I love what I do and I love that I can help these teens in any way that I can.
