Alyssa Molly Kristen- art therapy

Open Your Eyes created by Alyssa, Molly & Kristen

At Inspirations for Youth and Families we took art therapy to another level by challenging our teens to create art without using paint brushes!

With the parameters set our teens took this challenge head on and began creating their pieces from other items such as sponges, popsicle sticks, paint caps, tissue paper, gloves and even their fingers. Our girls had a lot of fun with this activity as they had to really think outside the box to convey their messages. Some of our girls even teamed up and created pieces together like the one pictured above.

Most of our teens use art therapy to create beautiful pieces that remind them to pursue difficult projects without giving up. Their pieces were so breathtaking we display them all through out the treatment center and residence. Some of our teens even decided to give their art therapy projects as gifts for their friends, family and fellow clients.

Why do we use art therapy at Inspirations?

Art Therapy helps our team of psychotherapists understand the teens’ perceptions and feelings about what has happened in the past – or what is happening in the present. Looking at and discussing their art helps our teens communicate easier. It is also an extremely healthy outlet for them. After admiring their beautiful artwork they develop self-esteem which plays an integral part of their recovery.

Through creative sessions like this our therapists are able to connect with our teens as a group as they take turns expressing their emotions. During art therapy sessions our teens often find themselves entering a safe place where they can freely express their emotions both verbally and visually.
