Over the years opioids have become more frequently abused by teens and young adults. Opioids are also known as mostly as pain relieving drugs. A few well-known names include Vicodin, Oxycontin or Codeine. Opioids are also highly addictive and can be administered orally, injected or snorted.When combined with alcohol they can also lower your heart rate and respiratory system which can lead to death. Additionally, many who begin abusing prescription opiates also tend to abuse drugs such as heroin to achieve a similar high.
This steady rise in opioid addiction is one that must be addressed and properly handled. These are hard drugs that if not under the right use and care can cause fatal damage to their well being. Although drug abuse it a tough topic to approach with a teen it is important that you do have the conversation as a family.
