Inspirations for Youth and Families sponsors the Boca Police Department again for their annual 5k Run and half marathon. The Boca PAL road race is the biggest race in Boca Raton. Inspirations has been a fixture for all of BocPAL’s events including their golf tournament and youth boxing programs.

This was the first year Inspirations brought their teens to volunteer at the road race. They gave out donuts and greeted people at our exhibit booth. This was a great opportunity for them to interact with all sorts of people and give back to the community. After the event, the teens continued their action packed day by going to the beach followed by dinner at a restaurant.

“We find that when the teens are exposed to the real world it really helps them in their recovery,” said Karen Corcoran-Walsh, owner of Inspirations.

Many of our teens have never helped with a charity before. We used this sober outing as an opportunity to teach our teens just how much they have to offer the community. They also saw police officers in an entirely different perspective. Not as foes, but friends.

Check out what our teen Kristen had to say about her experience:

“Half this stuff I’ve never done because of my addiction. So it feels awesome to be able to do this and help people. I think it’s a great thing and something people should be thankful for. “

Along with therapy, giving back and supporting the community are vitals skills teens need to have in recovery according to Karen Corcoran Walsh. She believes this will help teens to understand their actions and how they impact others. Teens also gain a sense of self-worth by contributing to a cause larger than themselves.

“Inspirations and Boca PAL share a common goal: to inspire people to be the best they can be. The police officers of the PAL and the counselors of Inspirations serve as role models to youth.”

-Karen Corcoran Walsh
