Teen Cocaine Statistics
In 2014, 2.6% of 12th graders were abusing cocaine.
Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that is derived from the leaves of the coca plant. It can be snorted, injected, and smoked. All three methods of cocaine abuse can lead to addiction and other severe health problems, including an increased risk of contracting HIV and other infectious diseases. Common slang names include coke, nose candy, blow, freebase, and ice. The intensity and duration of the drug’s effects—which include increased energy, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness—depend on the route of drug administration. The faster cocaine is absorbed into the bloodstream and delivered to the brain, the more intense the high.
