Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center visits Everglades

Inspirations for Youth and Families Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center visited Everglades Holiday Park to go air boating, search for alligators, see other natural life, and watch alligator holding demonstrations. The Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center teens had a great time learning interesting facts about alligators and actually watching a handler pose with an alligator underneath his chin.

One of the Inspirations Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center teens revealed the highlights of the excursion.

“We were on an air boat and went around the Everglades, watched awesome alligators, saw iguanas,” said Elliot, a teen at Inspirations for Youth and Families. “Then we went back to Inspirations and watched an alligator wrestling show. It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.”

For Elliot, to actually see a real live alligator up close was a rare opportunity as he resides in Rhode Island, where it is impossible to find one. Actually finding a gator was in question much of the air boat ride. The Inspirations’ teens saw everything but an alligator including iguanas, lizards, and birds.

The tour boat guide was explaining why it would be hard to see an alligator due to the cold water temperature in the Everglades.

“It is going to be tough to find these guys (alligators) in the evening like this,” said Everglades Holiday Park tour guide. “It is too cold. The alligators are sitting on the bottom. The water temperature down below a couple of feet is much warmer than on the surface.”

Well after numerous close calls, the teens were treated to not one but two alligator sightings. But that was only the beginning. The Inspirations teens – once on land – watched a thrilling demonstration of an alligator handler carefully holding onto an alligator. Folks don’t do this at home.

The whole afternoon trip was not only entertaining, exciting, but also educational for the Inspirations for Youth and Families teens at the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center.
