Ft. Lauderdale, Florida -– May 29, 2014 – Lauren Book, the founder of Lauren’s Kids, an organization that educates adults and children about sexual abuse topics through an in school curriculum, a 24-hour Crisis Hotline and speaking engagements around the country will be taking her experiences with abuse, recovery, survival and advocacy to Inspirations for Youth (IYF) Teen Addiction Rehab, one of the nation’s leading teen treatment centers.
“We are delighted to have someone of Lauren’s caliber and achievement, speak to our teens,” said Karen Corcoran-Walsh, co-founder of Inspirations for Youth. “The synergy between IYF and Lauren’s Kids runs deep. Both IYF and Lauren’s Kids are dedicated to treating youth that are vulnerable and need immediate attention through therapy.”
Corcoran-Walsh added that many of IYF’s teens in recovery have become addicted to drugs after experiencing childhood traumas like sexual abuse. “We have seen first-hand teens successfully and bravely complete our IYF program against the backdrop of horrific childhood traumas, including childhood sexual abuse.”
Corcoran-Walsh recognized the need for an adolescent treatment program, as she received numerous calls in her adult treatment center, the Cove Center for Recovery, from devastated and heart-broken parents of teenaged children. With very few adolescent treatment centers to refer parents to, Corcoran-Walsh took it upon herself to respond to the needs of her community by opening IYF in 2008. Corcoran-Walsh chose the name “Inspirations” to represent her vision for parents and teens who were struggling with the chaos of teen behaviors and substance use.
Book started the Lauren’s Kids foundation as a result of personally being a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. Armed with the knowledge that 95 percent of sexual abuse is preventable through education, Book sought to turn her experience into a vehicle to prevent childhood sexual abuse and heal survivors.
Lauren’s message to IYF is to inform the teens in recovery about finding light in dark places and pushing forward even when you don’t feel like you’ve got anything to give – “because the alternative is intolerable.” Lauren’s visit to IYF will empower the youth and give them the tools they need to survive and thrive if ever confronted with sexual abuse.
IYF is a premier teen addiction treatment center. The rehab facility treats teens with drug and alcohol addiction in a unique real-world approach, where its clients are often engaged in day-trips to attend Major League Baseball and National Football League games, as well as excursions to the beach and deep sea fishing. This form of recreational therapy teaches teens in recovery critical life and team building skills that are necessary to achieve happiness and become a productive member of the society.
