Virginia Teen Drug and Alcohol Abuse Facts
Mexican black tar has seized a growing share of the U.S.
heroin market, according to government estimates. In Huntington,
WV, a sudden increase of black-tar heroin overdoses shook
the community. Before the string of 12 fatal overdoses, "we
didn't even consider heroin an issue," said Huntington
Police Chief Skip Holbrook. The heroin problem has also grown
in Colorado, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and Utah.
Black tar dealers have been particularly successful in areas
where addiction to prescription painkillers
was widespread. The majority of these addicts are teens and
young adults working-class whites, switching to black tar,
which is cheaper and more powerful. Heroin was never available…
and now it's cheap and plentiful."
In York County, S.C., pain-pill addicts became hooked on black
tar purchased in Charlotte, N.C., half an hour away. "We
used to get maybe one overdose death a year" caused by
opiates, said Marvin Brown, commander of the county's drug
unit. "We had six in the first six months" of 2009.
In the suburbs south of Salt Lake City, heroin was unheard
of until dealers from Mexican black tar arrived, said Lt.
Phil Murphy of the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force. Now,
he said, young people looking for an alternative to pain pills
drive to Salt Lake to score black-tar heroin.
Also, authorities in Boulder and Fort Collins, Colo. -- home
to the University of Colorado and Colorado State University,
respectively -- report increased overdoses caused by black-tar
heroin purchased from dealers in Denver.
Ohio has also become a center of black-tar heroin networks,
and it was through a junkie in Columbus that black tar made
its way to Huntington.
Rural Athens, Vinton, Meigs and Hawking counties have seen
a tenfold increase in heroin addicts seeking treatment over
the last four years, and almost all were black-tar users.
"We were getting almost one [911 call] a day," said
Gordon Merry, director of emergency medical services for Cabell
County. "It taxed everyone: the EMS system, hospitals,
law enforcement."

If you suspect or know your teen is using black-tar or any
other illicit drug please get help. Save your teen's life.
Addiction is a viscious cycle, and you might have noticed
that certain efforts on your part have not had any effect
on your teen's drug abuse. When your child is dependent on
using drugs, no punishment given or privilege taken away will
stop their cravings for their drug of choice. They will continue
to get high, and your relationship will continue to get more
volatile. Home life can be stressful enough even without teen
drug abuse, but when you add it into the mix life often becomes
unmanageable for both you and your child. It is something
no parent is prepared for, and in some cases it can tear a
family apart. What is the best solution?
Addiction is a disease. Like other diseases addiction can
be treated and overcome. When you are ready to admit to yourself
that your child is addicted to drugs, you have made the first
step in correcting the problem. You will likely want to participate
in a teen intervention.
This can be a very effective way to finally make your child
wake up and realize how badly they are hurting everyone who
loves them. Let it be known that you will do everything you
can for them if they make attempts to end their drug abuse,
but if they don't you will no longer enable them. This will
often times make your child recognize the lack of control
they have over their drug abuse. An intervention
will likely persuade your teen to enter treatment, and when
they finally realize how their drug abuse
has effected others they will likely take their sobriety seriously
and want to make things right with you and with others.
