ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT IN IOWA
State treatment data for substance use disorders are derived
from two primary sources: (1) National Survey of Substance
Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), an annual 1-day census
of clients in treatment and (2) the Treatment Episode Data
Set (TEDS), which provides information on annual treatment
admissions.
According to the 2006 N-SSATS survey:
• Iowa showed a 1-day total of 7,229 clients in treatment,
the majority of whom
(6,660 or 92.1 percent) were in outpatient treatment. Of the
total number of clients in
treatment on this date, 793 (11 percent) were under the age
of 18.
According to 20032006 TEDS data:
Adolescent males accounted for 65 percent (8,578) of the 13,185
total adolescent substance abuse treatment admissions.
Of the total male admissions, 21 percent were drug treatment
admissions, 68.6 percent were alcohol and drug treatment, and
10.1 percent were alcohol treatment.
Of the total adolescent female admissions, 18.3 percent were
drug treatment, 68 percent were alcohol and drug treatment,
and 13.3 percent were alcohol treatment.
Among adolescent admissions in Iowa, marijuana and alcohol were
the most prevalent substances of abuse.
Of the total adolescent male admissions, 87.8 percent (7,529)
, reported marijuana use and 78.6 percent (6,746) reported alcohol
use.

, reported marijuana use and 81.3 percent (3,746) reported alcohol
use.
Further, 15.8 percent(2,082) of total adolescents admissions
reported methamphetamine use, 1,047 (12.2 percent) male admissions
and 1,035 (22.5 percent) female admissions. Similarly, 6.3 percent
(544) of male admissions and 9.3 (427) of female admissions
reported cocaine use.

NSDUH 20032006 estimates that more than 1.16 million adolescents
needed but did not receive treatment for illicit drug problems
and more than 1.3 million needed but did not receive treatment
for alcohol problems. NSDUH defines unmet treatment need
as an individual who meets the criteria for abuse of or dependence
on illicit drugs or alcohol according to the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV),
but who has not received specialty treatment for that problem
in the past year.
In 20032006,
Rates of the unmet need for past-year drug or alcohol treatment
were similar between males and females in Iowa.
2,000 Iowa males (2.0 percent) and 4,000 females (3.5 percent)
