Information provided in this page is the data described
in the Adolescent Behavioral Health reports derive principally
from national surveys conducted by the Office of Applied Studies,
a component of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration. Sources for all data used in this report appear
at the end.
ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG USE BY TEENS IN ILLINOIS
• In Illinois approximately 104,000 (9.5 percent) of
adolescents in Illinois used an illicit drug in the past month;
70,000 (6.4 percent) used marijuana, and 49,000 (4.5 percent)
used an illicit drug other than marijuana.
• 33,000 males and 32,000 females used pain relievers
nonmedically in the 12 months prior to the interview.

in the past month, and 10.5 percent (115,000) engaged in binge
drinking.
• Rates of illicit drug dependence or abuse were significantly
higher among males than females (5.1 v. 3.8 percent).
• Significantly more adolescent males than females in
Illinois needed but did not receive drug treatment (4.8 v.
3.6 percent).
• 28,000 males and 31,000 females needed but did not
receive treatment for past-year alcohol problems, and 19,000
females and 27,000 males needed but did not receive treatment
for past-year illicit drug problems.
• In Illinois adolescent females were more than two
times as likely as adolescent males to have
experienced an major depressive episode (MDE) in the past
year (11.2 v. 3.8 percent).
TEEN ILLICIT SUBSTANCE USE IN ILLINOIS
Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United
States. According to the combined 2003–2006 NSDUH:
• Approximately 104,000 (9.5 percent) of the nearly
1.1 million adolescents in Illinois used an illicit drug in
the past month; 70,000 (6.4 percent) used marijuana, and 49,000
(4.5 percent) used an illicit drug other than marijuana.
• Males were significantly more likely than females
to use an illicit drug other than marijuana
The misuse of pain relievers among youth is also a major public
health concern.
• In Illinois, 33,000 males and 32,000 females used
pain relievers nonmedically in the 12 months prior to the
interview.
• There were no significant differences in non-medical
pain reliever use between females and males in Illinois (5.9
v. 5.8 percent).
Adolescent Alcohol Use and Abuse in Illinois
• 17.2 percent of adolescents (189,000) used alcohol
in the past month, and 10.5 percent (115,000) engaged in binge
drinking. Binge drinking is defined as 5 or more drinks on
the same occasion on at least 1 day of past 30 days.
• Rates of current alcohol use and past-month binge
drinking among Illinois adolescents were similar between males
and females; 17.9 percent of males and 16.5 percent of females
currently used alcohol, and 11.5 percent of males and 9.5
percent of females engaged in binge drinking in the month
prior to the interview.
ADOLESCENT ALCOHOL AND ILLICIT DRUG DEPENDENCE OR
ABUSE IN ILLINOIS
According to the 2003–2006 NSDUH:
• Nationwide nearly 1.5 million adolescents were dependent
on or abused alcohol in the past year and more than 1.2 million
adolescents were dependent or abused illicit drugs.
• Overall, the rates of past-year abuse or dependence
on alcohol were significantly higher for females than males
(6.0 v. 5.4 percent), but rates of past-year abuse or dependence
on illicit drugs were similar between males and females.
• Rates of illicit drug dependence or abuse were significantly
higher among males than females (5.1 v. 3.8 percent). There
were no significant differences between males and females
on measures of past-year alcohol dependence or abuse or alcohol
or drug dependence and abuse.
ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT IN ILLINOIS
State treatment data for substance use disorders are derived
from two primary sources: (1) National Survey of Substance
Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), an annual 1-day census
of clients in treatment and (2) the Treatment Episode Data
Set (TEDS), which provides information on annual treatment
admissions.
According to the 2006 N-SSATS survey:
• Illinois showed a one-day total of 43,724 clients in treatment,
the majority of whom
(39,900 or 91.3 percent) were in outpatient treatment. Of
the total number of clients in
treatment on this date, 4,404 (10.7 percent) were under the
age of 18.
According to 2003–2006 TEDS data:
• In Illinois males accounted for 75 percent (29,146)
of the 38,827 adolescent substance abuse admissions.
• Of the total male admissions, 48.4 percent were drugs
only, 46.3 percent were alcohol and drugs, and 5.1 percent
were alcohol only. • Of the total adolescent female
admissions, 59.1 percent were drug treatment, 36.7 percent
were alcohol and drug treatment, and 4.2 percent were alcohol
treatment.
• Of the adolescent female admissions, 39.2 percent
were drugs only, 49.1 percent were
alcohol and drugs, and 11.6 percent were alcohol only.
Among adolescent admissions in Illinois, marijuana
and alcohol were the most prevalent substances of abuse.
• Of the total male admissions in Illinois, 93 percent
(27,090) reported marijuana use and 51.5 percent (14,998)
reported alcohol use.
• Of the total female admissions, 83 percent (8,031)
reported marijuana use and 60.7 percent (5,875) reported alcohol
use.
• Further, 2.9 percent (834) of males and 6.3 percent
(611) of females reported cocaine use
UNMET NEED FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT IN
ILLINOIS
NSDUH 2003–2006 estimates that more than 1.16 million
adolescents needed but did not receive treatment for illicit
drug problems and more than 1.3 million needed but did not
receive treatment for alcohol problems. NSDUH defines “unmet
treatment need” as an individual who meets the criteria
for abuse of or dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol according
to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
4th edition (DSM-IV), but who has not received specialty treatment
for that problem in the past year.
In 2003–2006,
• Significantly more adolescent males than females in
Illinois needed but did not receive
drug treatment (4.8 v. 3.6 percent). Rates of unmet need for
alcohol treatment were similar
between males and females in Illinois (5.1 v. 5.7 percent).
• 28,000 males and 31,000 females needed but did not receive
treatment for past year alcohol problems.
• 19,000 females and 27,000 males needed but did not receive
