June 16, 2010 --
According to Reuters, Californians are going to decide in November
if the law that would legalize possession and sale of marijuana
can be the law of their land.
The supporters of legalization of the marijuana called the
qualification of this initiative on the ballot, a watershed
moment for their cause. It is for a good reason too, because
they see their efforts are getting one step closer to bear
fruit. But the real question is that do we really need to
make it even easier for our teens to get their hands on marijuana,
the gateway drug.
Are we not already scratching our heads on how to get our
teens off smoking and drinking, which are the other legal
drugs. Yes there are people who might benefit from smoking
a joint or two a day as there are people who probably benefit
from one glass or two of wine every night with their dinner.
And frankly I don’t know who benefits from one cigarette
after his or her dinner every night and yet smoking is still
legal. But I am diverging. My point is how are we going to
control this monster that we are letting out of the cage?
Has anybody done any research to find out the ramification
of such decision on our youth and specifically our teens.
Teen addiction is already a major problem in America. We
see on the news and read in the newspapers that teen addiction
is reaching an epidemic proportion. We are already paying
a high price in drug related crimes, not mentioning the price
we all pay for lost lives, dreams and opportunities of our
teens struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.
Is the legalization going to make it harder to stop our teens
from experimenting first marijuana and then the hard core
drugs like coke and crack? What problem is this legalization
going to solve? Maybe I am naive. But I think when it comes
to relying on individual self-policing and self monitoring,
our race doesn’t have a good track record. But again
it is me.
