Do you have a teen
or pre-teen loved one that suffers from drug and/or alcohol abuse?

"Underage drinking presents an enormous public health issue. Alcohol is the drug of choice among children and adolescents. Annually, about 5,000 youth under age 21 die from motor vehicle crashes, other unintentional injuries, and homicides and suicides that involve underage drinking."

"In 2006, 1.4 million youth ages 12 to 17 needed treatment for an alcohol problem. Of this group, only 101,000 of them received any treatment at a specialty facility."

According to the 2006 N-SSATS survey:

• Louisiana showed a 1-day total of 9,280 clients in addiction treatment, the majority of whom (7,667 or 82.6 percent) were in outpatient addicton treatment. Of the total number of clients in treatment on this date, 601 (6.5 percent) were under the age of 18.

• Adolescent males accounted for 76.1 percent (6,078) of the 7,987 total adolescent substance abuse treatment admissions.

• Of the total male admissions, 56.6 percent were drug treatment admissions, 38.3 percent were alcohol and drug treatment, 2.8 percent were alcohol treatment, and 5.4 percent did not report type of treatment.

• Of the total adolescent female admissions, 53.8 percent were drug treatment, 38.4 percent were alcohol and drug treatment, 3.4 percent were alcohol only.

Among adolescent admissions in Louisiana, marijuana and alcohol were the most prevalent substances of abuse.
• Of the total adolescent male admissions, 92 percent (5,609) reported marijuana use and 41 percent (2,465) reported alcohol use.

• Of the total adolescent female admissions, 82 percent (1,562) reported marijuana use and 42 percent (798) reported alcohol use.

• Further, 8.2 percent (496) of male admissions and 16 percent (305) of female admissions reported cocaine use.

NSDUH 2003–2006 estimates that more than 1.16 million adolescents needed but did not receive treatment for illicit drug problems and more than 1.3 million needed but did not receive treatment for alcohol problems. NSDUH defines “unmet treatment need” as an individual who meets the criteria for abuse of or dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM IV), but who has not received specialty treatment for that problem in the past year.

In 2003–2006,
