ADOLESCENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT IN LOUISIANA
State treatment data for substance use disorders are derived
from two primary sources: (1) National Survey of Substance
Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), an annual 1-day census
of clients in treatment and (2) the Treatment Episode Data
Set (TEDS), which provides information on annual treatment
admissions.
According to the 2006 N-SSATS survey:
• Louisiana showed a 1-day total of 9,280 clients in
addiction treatment, the majority of whom (7,667 or 82.6 percent)
were in outpatient addicton treatment. Of the total number
of clients in treatment on this date, 601 (6.5 percent) were
under the age of 18.
According to 2003–2006 TEDS data:
• Adolescent males accounted for 76.1 percent (6,078)
of the 7,987 total adolescent substance abuse treatment admissions.
• Of the total male admissions, 56.6 percent were drug
treatment admissions, 38.3 percent were alcohol and drug treatment,

report type of treatment.
• Of the total adolescent female admissions, 53.8 percent
were drug treatment, 38.4 percent were alcohol and drug treatment,
3.4 percent were alcohol only.

treatment need” as an individual who meets the criteria
for abuse of or dependence on illicit drugs or alcohol according
to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
4th edition (DSM IV), but who has not received specialty treatment
