Rhode Island Teen Drug and Alcohol Abuse Facts

According to the West Virginia Department of Education in 2008 there were 339 prescription drug related cases reported in schools across the state.

The high school student also warns of something called "Pharm Parties" where teens put a variety of prescription drugs in a bowl, pick a couple, a take them with alcohol which is a potentially deadly combination.

What is really alarming is that teens are reporting that they are smoking the pills instead of swallowing or snorting them. Smoking pills is more dangerous than taking them by mouth or snorting them, because the drug goes directly from the lungs to the brain, instead of being slowly absorbed through the stomach, kidney and other organs.

The Department of Education in Rhode Island, says you should keep your prescription drugs locked up, keep track of how many pills you have, and educate your children on the dangers of taking prescription medication.
